Exploring the Hashiras in Demon Slayer and the history behind the creation of the Demon Slayer Corps

The highly anticipated return of “Demon Slayer” for its third season has caused quite a stir among fans, both new and old. With the first episode premiering on April 9th, 2023, fans were thrilled to finally see the progenitor of Breathing Styles, Yoriichi Tsugikuni, on screen for the first time. This revelation of Yoriichi’s connections to Tanjiro’s ancestors has sparked intense interest in the history of the Demon Slayer Corps and the Hashiras.

The Demon Slayer Corps, also known as the Kisatsutai, has been around for a millennium, dedicated to slaying demons and saving humanity. The corps was founded by the Ubuyashiki family and has served as the chief of the Demon Slayer corps for the entirety of its existence. Currently, the 97th leader of the corps is Kagaya Ubuyashiki, whose sole mission is to kill Kibutsuji Muzan and put an end to the demonic rule.

Although Yoriichi was not the first member of the corps, he is credited with giving them the strength to fight against demons by creating the Sun Breathing technique, which is regarded as the strongest of all the breathing techniques. Yoriichi almost killed Muzan during their encounter and to this day, Muzan fears him. This powerful warrior was responsible for teaching other members of the corps the art of breathing, making him a vital figure in the history of the Demon Slayer Corps.

The Hashiras, or Pillars, are the most powerful swordsmen in the Demon Slayer organization and the second-highest ranked members of the Corps, second only to the leader of the organization. They are highly respected and play a crucial role in the organization, as they are tasked with fighting the strongest demons. The first generation of Hashiras, known as the Golden Generation, was made up of highly talented warriors who indirectly learned breathing techniques from Yoriichi himself.

The Golden Generation also unlocked Demon Slayer marks, which is evident in Yoriichi, and some members of the current generation have also unlocked this mark. This mark gives the wearer superhuman strength and abilities at the cost of their life force, and anyone who activates this mark will have a life span of a maximum of 25 years.

In season 3, there are currently 9 Hashiras with specific breathing techniques, including the Mist Hashira Muichiro Tokito and the Love Hashira Mitsuri Kanroji. The current generation is considered one of the strongest in all of Demon Slayer history, with only two spots currently vacant. Fans have seen the Sound Hashira, Flame Hashira, and Water Hashira in action so far.

The present Hashiras in season 3 are as follows:

  • Giyu Tomioka – Water Hashira – Water Breathing
  • Kyojurou Rengoku – Flame Hashira – Flame Breathing
  • Sanemi Shinazugawa – Wind Hashira – Wind Breathing
  • Mitsuri Kanroji – Love Hashira – Love Breathing

  • Shinobu Kocho – Insect Hashira – Insect Breathing
  • Tengen Uzui – Sound Hashira – Sound Breathing
