“Naruto Sakura” anime on hiatus due to actor health issues

According to an article from Crunchyroll, Axl One, the talent agency representing Sakura Haruno’s voice actor in the anime series “Boruto: Naruto Next Generations,” has announced that the actor is taking an indefinite hiatus from the show due to a diagnosis of ulcerative colitis, an inflammatory bowel disease. The agency stated that Nakamura received a poor bill of health after undergoing multiple tests concerning her physical condition over the past month. These tests indicated that she had tested positive for ulcerative colitis, which can cause inflammation and ulcers in the digestive tract, particularly in the large intestine and colon. Symptoms of the condition can include abdominal cramping and loss of appetite.

Nakamura has been playing the role of Sakura Haruno since the original “Naruto” series and continued her work in “Naruto Shippuden,” as well as in the “Naruto” films and video games. She had also voiced Mia Fey in the “Ace Attorney” anime and Matsumae in “Tokyo Ghoul: re.” Her other voice-acting credits include work on the “Sonic Riders” video games and dubbing actresses like Amy Adams and Kirsten Dunst in various films, such as “Man of Steel” and “Dear Evan Hansen.”

As of writing, it is unclear when or if Nakamura will return to “Boruto: Naruto Next Generations” as the voice of Sakura Haruno, or if there will be a need for a recasting of the role. Fans of the Naruto franchise know Sakura as the wife of Sasuke Uchiha and the mother of their daughter, Sarada. She also assumed the position of Head of the Medical Department as one of the world’s most skilled medical-nin. “Boruto” follows the adventures of the next generation of ninja, including the children of Naruto and Hinata Hyuga, Ino Yamanaka and Sai, and other original characters.

Sadly, Nakamura’s diagnosis is only one of several tragic events to affect the “Naruto” anime’s cast. In June 2022, Billy Kametz, the English voice actor behind Metal Lee and Ferdinand von Aegir in “Fire Emblem: Three Houses,” passed away from stage IV colon cancer at 35 years old. Previously, Michael Lindsay, the English voice actor behind Kankuro, died at 56 years old from unknown causes in 2019. Additionally, Toshihiko Seki, the Japanese voice of Iruka Umino, contracted COVID-19 in early 2020, which led to his hospitalization.
