Naruto will air on Sony YAY! in India starting from August 15th

The popular Japanese anime series, Naruto, is all set to make a comeback on Indian television screens. Sony YAY!, a popular children’s entertainment channel in India, has confirmed that it will be airing the anime in five regional languages – Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Bengali, starting from August 15. The show will be telecasted on weekdays, from Monday to Friday at 8 PM.

Previously, the anime was broadcasted on Cartoon Network and Animax in India. It is still unclear if Sony YAY! will be airing the entire series, which consists of 220 episodes. However, the channel has confirmed that it aims to bring anime content to a wider audience by providing multiple dubs, catering to all age groups.

Leena Lele Dutta, the business head of Sony Pictures Networks India, kids genre, expressed her excitement about Naruto’s return to Indian television screens. She stated that the popularity of anime has been on the rise in India, and their goal with Naruto is to provide a popular series with a multilingual offering, which will help satiate the demand for anime lovers and increase its reach to the masses. She further added that with Naruto, Sony YAY! will cater to a larger audience, including kids and young adults, and strengthen its leadership position in the children’s entertainment segment.

The Naruto anime series is based on the equally popular manga series written and illustrated by Masashi Kishimoto. It revolves around Naruto Uzumaki, a young ninja who dreams of becoming the leader of his village, the Hokage, and earning respect from his friends and people of the village. The manga was published by Shueisha in its weekly magazine, Weekly Shonen Jump, from 1999 to 2014, and is collected in 72 volumes. It is considered one of the best-selling manga series in history, with 250 million copies in circulation worldwide.

The anime television series, produced by studio Pierrot and directed by Hayato Date, first aired in Japan on October 3, 2002, and ended on February 8, 2007. When the show was introduced to India, it became a hit, and one of the shows that helped kickstart the anime fanbase in India. People who grew up watching Naruto and similar shows would then seek out more anime or re-watch the series in its entirety in its original version. This is because TV channels in India would often skip episodes, not air the entire show on TV, or censor a lot of material. Naruto features references to alcohol, sexual innuendo, blood, and death, so it remains to be seen how heavy the censorship would be in the Sony YAY! run.

For those who prefer watching anime without censorship, the original Japanese version of Naruto can be watched on Netflix India, along with English subtitles and an English dub. Naruto Shippuden, the sequel to the original series, is also available on the streaming platform since August 8.
