Assassination Classroom removed from Florida school due to complaints

Citizens Defending Freedom and Moms For Liberty have been actively challenging the inclusion of the popular manga series Assassination Classroom in public schools, citing the nature of its content. Their protests have resulted in at least one school allegedly removing the books from its shelves. This is not the first time that the series has faced controversy in the United States; it was previously banned in a New York school district in 2019.

The recent challenges against Assassination Classroom are part of a larger movement to censor what some individuals and organizations consider objectionable content from public school libraries. Jennifer Pippin, the chairperson for the Indian River County chapter of Moms for Liberty, has been particularly vocal about her objections to the series. She is quoted as saying, “We don’t want students to think it’s okay to kill their teachers,” referring to the plot of the series in which an amorphous alien creature who threatens all of humanity takes up residence as a teacher and encourages his students to find a way to kill him before he destroys the Earth.

Assassination Classroom was created by Yusei Matsui in 2012 as a manga series and was published by Weekly Shonen Jump. It was later adapted into an anime series by Studio Lerche in 2016. In the west, the manga has been licensed by Viz Media, while the anime has been licensed and dubbed by Funimation. The series has been popular among middle and high school students since it was featured on Cartoon Network’s Toonami block a few years ago. The manga is readily available in stores like Barnes & Noble.

Despite the series’ popularity, some individuals and groups have raised concerns about its violent and potentially harmful content. The debate over whether certain books and media should be included in public school libraries is a contentious one, with arguments on both sides. Some argue that students should have access to a wide range of material, including controversial and challenging works, while others maintain that it is the responsibility of school officials to ensure that students are not exposed to potentially harmful content. Ultimately, the decision to include or exclude particular books and media from public school libraries is up to individual schools and districts.
