Voice actor Jamieson Price won’t be returning to BLEACH

Voice actor Jamieson Price, who portrayed Yasutora “Chad” Sado in the original English dub of BLEACH, will not be returning to reprise his role for the upcoming Thousand-Year Blood War arc. The announcement of the new English dub cast came with news that the character of Sado would be portrayed by a new voice actor, Alain Mesa, prompting Price to take to Twitter and explain his reasons for stepping down from the role.

In his tweets, Price revealed that he has made a personal decision to no longer voice characters of color in order to give opportunities to actors who can better represent those characters. He acknowledged the history of unequal access to opportunity in the anime industry and stated that he wanted to make room for actors with more life experience to portray these characters.

Price’s decision has been praised by other voice actors, including Anairis Quiñones, who has spoken out in the past about the underpaid and underrepresented nature of voice actors of color in the industry. Quiñones described Price’s decision as a “chad move” and commended him for making room for better representation.

The Thousand-Year Blood War arc is the anime adaptation of the final arc of the BLEACH manga and marks the return of the franchise to television after a ten-year absence. The English dub is set to premiere in the US and internationally on streaming platforms Hulu and Disney+.
