DBZ Budokai Tenkaichi 4 should continue Kakarot’s single-player legacy

Dragon Ball Z is one of the most popular anime series of all time, and it has spawned a variety of video games over the years. From arena fighters to RPGs, there have been many different types of games based on the Dragon Ball Z franchise. One of the most successful series in the franchise has been the Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi series, which was popular in the 2000s and gave many international fans their first experience playing a Dragon Ball Z video game.

Now, Bandai Namco has announced that the series is making a comeback with the release of Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 4. This is a legacy sequel to one of the franchise’s most successful series, and it is in a position to evolve the franchise’s arena-fighter for a whole new generation. With over 15 years worth of installments to build upon, Budokai Tenkaichi 4 can learn from past fighting titles’ strengths and weaknesses.

While the Budokai Tenkaichi series has been known for its incredibly deep rosters, featuring even the most obscure characters across Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, and Dragon Ball GT, it has also had a solid story mode. The titles took players through the major events of both the Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball GT anime and allowed them to reenact their biggest 1v1 battles. However, the series had not released a fully single-player Dragon Ball game in quite some time until Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot was released in 2020.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot was not only a solid adaptation of the anime, but it was also one of the 10 best RPGs of 2020. Its approachable RPG elements made the age-old tale of Goku feel fresh and exciting. Players could do various side quests and explore an open world, while still closely following the classic story beats featured in most Dragon Ball Z games. In defying the odds, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot raised the bar for both the franchise’s video game storytelling and single-player mechanics, creating a legacy that will likely stretch far into the future.

Moving forward, Dragon Ball titles have the best foundation in the series’ history on which to build their own single-player modes, with Budokai Tenkaichi 4 likely to be the first to do so. The game needs to continue the single-player legacy of Kakarot while building on the franchise’s past strengths and weaknesses. The title can practically pick and choose pieces to adapt from its fighting game predecessors, but Budokai Tenkaichi 4 needs only to carry forward the strengths of Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot to build a solid single-player experience.

Fans are eagerly awaiting more news on Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 4, but it is still in development, and it may be a while before we get any more details. However, if Budokai Tenkaichi 4 follows in the footsteps of other recent Dragon Ball games, it is sure to be more than worth the wait. With the popularity of both Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot and the series’ current fighting game offering, Dragon Ball FighterZ, the next entry in the Budokai Tenkaichi series seems primed for success. If the game combines the extensive character roster of previous titles with the solid single-player experience of Kakarot, it could be the most thorough exploration of the anime from start to finish.
