Assassination Classroom targeted in book ban movement in Florida and other states

In recent news, it appears that the book ban movement is now setting its sights on manga, with popular series Assassination Classroom being a particular target. Reports indicate that a middle school in Florida removed three volumes of the manga from its library after receiving complaints, and the manga is also facing a potential ban in the Elmbrook School District in Wisconsin. The main issue at the heart of the controversy is the violent content of the story, which takes place in a school setting.

The Florida school in question, Gifford Middle School, reportedly removed the manga after a local chapter of Moms for Liberty expressed concern about the appropriateness of the material. According to Jennifer Pippin, a chair of Moms for Liberty, the manga is “incredibly inappropriate” for schools, and could give students the impression that it’s acceptable to harm their teachers. Meanwhile, in Wisconsin, parents have raised concerns that the manga promotes gun violence against teachers. Despite pushback from library executives, the Elmbrook School District ultimately chose to remove its copies of the manga in response to pressure.

Assassination Classroom tells the story of a class of middle school students who learn that their homeroom teacher is actually an alien fugitive who plans to destroy the Earth. The students decide to take matters into their own hands and attempt to assassinate their teacher, but things become complicated when they discover that he’s an incredibly skilled educator. The manga has won numerous awards and has been translated into multiple languages, including English.

This is not the first time that manga has been the subject of book bans and censorship efforts in the United States. Other series, such as Death Note, have faced similar controversies over the years. However, with the ongoing issue of school violence in America, some parents and educators are understandably sensitive about the depiction of violence in a school setting, particularly when it involves students attempting to harm their teachers. As the debate over the appropriateness of Assassination Classroom continues, it remains to be seen how many other schools and districts may choose to remove the manga from their collections.
