Yoriichi’s status as an Upper Moon 1 demon and his relation to Tanjiro in Demon Slayer are both unclear

In the first episode of Demon Slayer season 3, Tanjiro dreams of Yoriichi, the legendary Sun Breathing Demon Slayer who defeated Muzan. This leads to speculation among fans about whether Yoriichi is Tanjiro’s father or related to Upper Moon 1 Demon Kokushibo. Yoriichi and Tanjiro use Sun Breathing and wear Hanafuda earrings, passed down from generation to generation, suggesting a connection between them. However, Yoriichi saved Tanjiro’s ancestors Sumiyoshi and his wife and passed on the 13 techniques of Sun Breathing to them, which were later passed down to Tanjiro. Yoriichi’s only heirloom, the Hanafuda earrings, were also passed down to Tanjiro. This legacy is better than being related by blood. There are many physical similarities between Yoriichi and Kokushibo, such as their hairstyle and fashion sense. However, they are not the same person. Yoriichi had a brother who was weaker than him and turned to Muzan to become stronger. Kokushibo was raised like a prince and trained as a Samurai. Yoriichi saved Tanjiro’s ancestors, and Tanjiro later inherits his techniques, creating a legacy that goes beyond biological ties.
