Yuri Lowenthal sees Naruto episode 30 as the ultimate test for fans

“Naruto” is undeniably one of the most iconic anime series of all time, with a massive fan base that spans multiple generations. The show’s 700 episodes offer a plethora of moments that resonate with viewers, and discussions around the greatest moments in the show frequently surface on online forums like Reddit.

One of the most popular moments among fans is Naruto’s return to defend the Hidden Leaf Village from Pain, which has been mentioned in numerous discussions about the series’ all-time greatest moments. Another recurring favorite is any iteration of Naruto vs. Sasuke, which never fails to excite the fan base. Voice actors Maile Flanagan and Junko Takeuchi, who voice Naruto in the English and Japanese dubs, respectively, also have their own favorite moments in the show. Flanagan cited Naruto’s mastery of the Rasengan as a standout, while Takeuchi chose Inoshikacho’s final moment with Asuma.

Interestingly, Sasuke’s English dub actor, Yuri Lowenthal, pointed to a moment much earlier in the Naruto timeline as his favorite. In Episode 30, Sasuke and Orochimaru come face to face for the first time, and Sasuke awakens his full Sharingan for the first time. Lowenthal believes this moment serves as a litmus test for new viewers, as it represents a major turning point in the series.

During an interview with Crunchyroll to celebrate Sasuke’s 20-year journey, Lowenthal reflected on the significance of the scene, noting that it changes the show’s tone and sets up important storylines for future episodes. He even goes so far as to say that new viewers should at least watch up to Episode 30 before giving up on the show entirely.

While Lowenthal acknowledges that he has never encountered anyone who couldn’t get into Naruto, he believes that if a viewer can’t get invested in the show after 30 episodes, it’s probably not for them. Nevertheless, he is quick to point out that Episode 30 is a standout moment that energizes the entire show and is well worth the wait.

The scene had a significant impact on Lowenthal and the rest of the cast and crew as well. Lowenthal noted that everyone involved in the episode knew they had something special on their hands, and they devoted extra resources to perfecting it. As a result, the scene remains a favorite among fans and serves as a pivotal moment in the Naruto saga.
