Naruto’s voice actress gets bored repeating lines after years of playing the character

The “Naruto” anime franchise has undergone a lot of changes over the years, from character growth to animation style and even a shift in focus to the next generation with “Boruto”. However, one aspect that has largely remained constant is the voice cast for the anime adaptation, with many of the performers continuing to voice their characters for roughly 20 years and counting. Maile Flanagan has been the voice of Naruto in the English dub cast since the show’s inception, and the role has had a profound impact on her personal life, with Flanagan citing Naruto as a role model who taught her to never give up. Despite her strong dedication to the role, Flanagan admitted in an interview that she occasionally gets bored of repeating the same generic lines for certain projects.

In a conversation with YouTuber Isaiah Hudson, Flanagan was asked if she ever gets tired of reciting certain lines of dialogue as Naruto across various projects in the franchise. The actress responded with an honest “yes,” adding that she gives it her all when recording, but expressing frustration at having to repeatedly say lines like “I’m gonna be Hokage someday!” in licensed “Naruto” video games. Flanagan estimates that she has voiced the character in well over 40 distinct “Naruto” games, and recording for just one of these games required roughly 12,000 lines of dialogue. As such, it’s easy to see why the work might get a little monotonous. “Unless they have plot points and dialogue, I say the same thing over and over and over again,” Flanagan told Hudson.

Despite feeling bored at times, Flanagan still values the role of Naruto and appreciates the financial stability it provides. She believes that Naruto is an important character who resonates with people, and she enjoys seeing how the character has grown over time. For Flanagan, playing Naruto has been a rewarding experience, even if it means reciting the same lines of dialogue for countless video games.
