K-pop idol to play assassin teacher in “Blue Birthday” drama airing on Naver TV in June

Jiyoung, a former member of the popular K-pop girl group Kara, is set to make her film debut in Eiichiro Hasumi’s “Ansatsu Kyoshitsu” (“Assassination Classroom”), which opened in Japanese theaters on March 21, 2015. The movie is based on Yusei Matsui’s manga series of the same name, and tells a humorous and bizarre story about a skilled octopus-like teacher who trains students to assassinate him in order to save the world. Jiyoung plays the character of Irina “Bitch-sensei” Jelavic, a Russian assassin who is working undercover as an English teacher.

In an interview with The Japan Times, Jiyoung expresses her excitement about playing such a sexy and seductive character in her film debut. She admits to feeling some pressure going into the role, but says that once the cameras started rolling, she forgot her nerves and was able to perform to the best of her ability. Jiyoung had been taking action-stunt lessons and had hoped that her character would have some fighting scenes in the movie, but unfortunately, that did not happen.

Jiyoung is determined to make a name for herself as an actress and step out of the shadow of her K-pop career. She has already appeared in two Japanese TV dramas and last year traveled to London to study acting. Although it is not easy for her to work in a foreign language, she enjoys the challenge and is working hard to improve her Japanese. She is also learning English with the hope of eventually working in Hollywood. Jiyoung is determined to achieve her dream of becoming a respected actress in her own right.
