Bleach voice actor won’t wait long for Thousand-Year Blood War return call

David Lodge, who played the fierce and bloodthirsty Kenpachi Zaraki in the original Bleach anime, is eager to reprise his iconic role in the Thousand-Year Blood War adaptation. Lodge, who voiced Kenpachi in the English dub of the original series, recently took to Twitter to urge VIZ Media to bring him back for the new series. Responding to a tweet about whether VIZ had contacted him about reprising his role, Lodge wrote, “Ok VIZ! One shot to get me before I move on to other work! I just want to give my millions of fans…what they want…me back as Kenpachi. Thx! Dave.”

Kenpachi Zaraki is the leader of the battle-hungry 11th Division in Gotei 13 and one of protagonist Ichigo Kurosaki’s first major opponents during the “Soul Society Arc”. Lodge’s portrayal of Kenpachi was widely beloved by fans of the series, making his return to the role a highly anticipated event.

Thousand-Year Blood War is the long-awaited adaptation of the final arc of the bestselling manga series by Tite Kubo. The original Bleach anime premiered in October 2004 and ran for 366 episodes before concluding in March 2012. Although the show covered much of Kubo’s story, it left many chapters unadapted until now. The Thousand-Year Blood War story arc depicts a bloody and brutal feud between the Soul Society and the Wandenreich, a secret Quincy empire.

Many members of the original Bleach creative team have returned to bring the sequel series to life, including composer Shiro Sagisu and character designer Masahi Kudo. However, Tomohisa Taguchi has replaced anime industry veteran Noriyuki Abe as director. The original Japanese voice actors for several of the main characters have also returned, including Masakazu Morita as Ichigo, Fumiko Orikasa as Rukia, Noriaki Sugiyama as Uryu Ishida, and Yuki Matsuoka as Orihime Inoue.

The first episode of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War debuted on October 10 and is currently available to stream exclusively on Hulu in the United States and on Disney+ internationally. However, fans have expressed frustration with the loss of streaming rights to the original Bleach series by Crunchyroll, leading some to threaten piracy of both the original series and the new adaptation. Despite the streaming controversy, anticipation for the Thousand-Year Blood War adaptation remains high among fans of the series.
