Food Wars! mangaka adds new entry to year-long Dragon Ball project

The Dragon Ball franchise has been a fan-favorite for over four decades and is known for its action-packed storyline, memorable characters, and iconic artwork. As part of the celebrations for the 40th anniversary of mangaka Akira Toriyama’s original series, each of the 42 covers in the series is being redesigned by different mangakas.

This project began in August 2021, with Masashi Kishimoto, the creator of the Naruto manga series, redrawing the cover for volume 11. Since then, several other mangakas have contributed to this project, each adding their unique style to the covers of the series. The latest redesign is for volume 10 and features artwork from Shun Saeki, best known as the illustrator behind the popular Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Soma manga series.

In the original artwork for volume 10, Bulma is the main focus, wearing a pair of pants with one leg cut off and holding a gun in her left hand while Goku and a motorcycle are seen in the background. Saeki’s redesign keeps Bulma as the main focus but with a slightly different pose and using his own unique style. Goku’s shocked expression is still in the foreground, but the motorcycle is now in a more subtle appearance, and a rock wall has been added behind Bulma.

It is interesting to note that the redesigns for the covers are being done by different mangakas who were likely inspired by the Dragon Ball series. This project shows how influential and beloved the franchise has become over the years. The fact that these mangakas are contributing to the project is a testament to the impact that Dragon Ball has had on the world of manga.

The Dragon Ball 40th anniversary celebration’s cover redesign project is set to continue until November 2024, with one cover redesign being released each month. Fans can keep up with all the latest news and updates on the Dragon Ball anime and manga, as well as general anime, manga, film, and live-action news as 2023 progresses.
