Piccolo’s Namekian background is Dragon Ball’s least explored angle

In the world of Dragon Ball, the Saiyans have always been the primary focus of the story. However, there is another group of aliens that have been somewhat overlooked throughout the franchise: the Namekians. In particular, the character of Piccolo and his Namekian heritage is an angle that has yet to be fully explored.

While Piccolo was initially introduced in Dragon Ball as an earthbound demon, it was later revealed that he and his “son” were actually aliens from the planet Namek. Despite this revelation, the Namekian culture has only been briefly showcased in Dragon Ball Z and Piccolo’s reaction to it was not fully explored. This lack of focus on the Namekians has continued throughout later story arcs, with even Piccolo’s relationship to Dende being basically non-existent.

Given how much attention the Saiyans have received in the franchise, it may be time for Dragon Ball to give the same treatment to the Namekians. Piccolo is, in fact, the strongest Namekian, having fused with Nail and later rejoining with Kami to become essentially the ultimate Namekian. However, his nature as such is not often brought up, and his relationship to his heritage is not explored in depth.

It would be interesting to see how Piccolo, as an alien, would react to learning more about his true home and the culture of the Namekians. For example, when he first discovered that he was a Namekian, he seemed somewhat flabbergasted and only came to protect the people because he saw them as his own. Providing more cultural context to his heritage would have been a missed opportunity to add depth to his character and cement his transition from his father’s worldview into the role of a hero.

Additionally, Piccolo and Dende could benefit from a closer relationship. With Piccolo now more protective of The Lookout after fusing with Kami, it would make sense if he and Dende were closer than they are. The two characters would complement each other’s personalities and histories while showing that a character doesn’t have to be an active fighter to be important in the Dragon Ball series. They could bond over their shared Namekian heritage and introduce each other to various elements of their respective worlds. This would not only give Dende more of a role than just a healer but would also develop Piccolo’s character beyond the fights.

Overall, the Namekians and their culture have yet to receive the attention they deserve in the Dragon Ball franchise. Focusing on parallel concepts with the Saiyans would keep non-Saiyan characters in the spotlight and remind fans that there are other prominent aliens in the series.
