Demon Slayer has a perfect prequel pitch

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba has garnered a huge following since the release of its anime adaptation, and many fans are eager to see the franchise expand beyond the main story. While the anime covers only a few years in the Demon Slayer Corps’ battle against the demon overlord Muzan Kibutsuji, the history and lore of the Demon Slayers constantly referenced throughout the series hints at a longer, more expansive story that fans are clamoring to see.

In a recent Reddit post, many Demon Slayer fans expressed their desire for a prequel series set in the Sengoku era of the series, which is also known as the “Golden Age of the Demon Slayers.” This period, which existed 500 years before Tanjiro’s story, is when the Demon Slayer Corps was at its strongest, with legendary hero Yoriichi Tsugikuni leading the charge.

Yoriichi’s story is one of Shakespearean-level drama, featuring a divine child prodigy with a sword who eventually develops the breathing styles that give Demon Slayers their power. As Yoriichi dispatches demons all the way up the chain to Muzan himself, he trains powerful Hashira and helps the Demon Slayer Corps grow in strength. But his story is also one of tragedy, as he and his older twin brother Michikatsu Tsugikuni slowly grow apart, with envy eventually consuming Michikatsu’s heart.

Given what the series has already established about the Demon Slayer Corps’ history, a prequel set in the Sengoku era seems like a natural fit for the franchise. Fans have also expressed their excitement about the potential to see more of the Hashira and Upper/Lower rank demons that have been teased throughout the main series. With renewed interest in the history of the Demon Slayers thanks to Demon Slayer Season 3, many fans are hopeful that a prequel series exploring the Sengoku era will eventually become a reality.
