Why Genya in Demon Slayer uses a gun instead of a sword

Genya Shinazugawa is introduced as a hostile and rude character, who shows no respect towards Tanjiro and his sister Nezuko, during their entrance exam to become Demon Slayers. Genya comes from a family of demon slayers, who have a history of struggling against demons. His father, who was also a demon slayer, was killed by a demon, and Genya blames himself for not being able to protect him.

Genya’s guilt and frustration towards himself led him to pursue becoming a demon slayer with a unique weapon that would allow him to fight demons without the use of Breathing techniques. He uses a double-barreled pistol that shoots special bullets crafted from Scarlet Crimson Iron Sand and Scarlet Ore. These materials are the same ones used to make Nichirin blades, giving Genya’s bullets a similar power to the Nichirin swords.

However, Genya’s gun alone is not enough to defeat demons. To become a competent demon slayer, Genya trained under the Stone Hashira, Gyomei, who taught him a technique to mimic the results of Breathing styles. This technique, known as Repetitive Action, opens up the five senses, allowing the user to achieve the same Total Concentration gained through Water Breathing or Flame Breathing. Combining this technique with the special bullets made in the Swordsmith Village, Genya can keep up with his peers in battle and has the ability to slay demons.

Apart from his unique weapon, Genya’s other extraordinary ability is that he can consume the flesh of demons and gain their powers. This makes him a formidable opponent and a valuable asset to the Demon Slayer Corps. However, this ability comes with a risk as well. If he consumes too much, he can turn into a demon himself.

As the series progresses, Genya’s character undergoes significant development. He gradually becomes more open-minded and starts to develop a relationship with Tanjiro, who he previously disliked. Genya also reveals his deep-seated insecurities and guilt about his father’s death, which he carries with him constantly.

In the latest season, Genya plays a vital role in the “Swordsmith Village” arc. He joins Tanjiro and his team on their mission to investigate a mysterious demon that’s been targeting demon slayers. During this arc, Genya shows his combat skills and ability to work as a team player. He also reveals more of his backstory and how he developed his unique fighting style.

Overall, Genya’s character is a fascinating addition to the Demon Slayer series. His unique weapon and ability to consume demon flesh make him stand out among the other demon slayers. However, it’s his emotional journey and character growth that make him an essential character to the series. Genya’s relationship with Tanjiro and his fellow demon slayers will undoubtedly play a significant role in the series’ future.
