“Jujutsu Kaisen” spinoff focuses on character Nobara

Jujutsu Kaisen fans have a reason to celebrate as the English translation of the second light novel in the series is now available. Titled Jujutsu Kaisen: Thorny Road at Dawn, this new novel expands on the rich lore of the sorcerers and cursed spirits that fans have come to love. The novel is written by Ballad Kitaguni and illustrated by Gege Akutami, the creator of Jujutsu Kaisen. The novel consists of five short stories that are interconnected and provide additional character development, background, and context to the events taking place in the manga.

As the cover art suggests, the first story in the novel features Nobara Kugisaki, one of the main characters in Jujutsu Kaisen. This story takes place on the eve of the contest between the second-year students and Kyoto Jujutsu High, which is depicted in the manga’s “Kyoto Goodwill Event” arc. Nobara interacts with Toge Inumaki, a second-year student known for his quiet demeanor and cerebral nature. Through their conversation, readers get a glimpse into both characters’ lives that have not been explored in the manga or anime. For example, readers learn about Nobara’s home village and how stifling life was for her due to her abilities and desires. The story also provides an interesting pairing of Nobara and Toge that has not been explored much in the manga or anime.

While the information in the novel is not essential to understanding the manga, it adds a deeper level of understanding and engagement for readers. Fans of Jujutsu Kaisen appreciate how the light novel series helps make the notoriously complex story of Akutami easier to digest. Additionally, readers will be pleased to reconnect with Nobara, who died in the manga earlier than expected, as the novel provides additional content about her character that may not appear again.

Overall, Jujutsu Kaisen: Thorny Road at Dawn is an excellent addition to the series and provides fans with more content to enjoy while they wait for the anime’s second season and the next chapter of the manga. The novel is available from Viz Media and other book merchants, with a slight discount available when purchased directly from Viz Media.
