Meaning of Each Demon Slayer Sword Color

“The Nichirin swords in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba have highly meaningful colors” is a statement that holds true throughout the series. In Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba, an organization called the Demon Slayer Corps is tasked with protecting Japan from human-eating demons who only come out once the sun goes down. Each demon slayer is armed with a Nichirin Blade, a special sword forged from an ore that absorbs sunlight.

What makes these swords unique is that they turn a specific color after their owner grips its handle for a while. Each color has a different meaning and imparts certain properties to the blade and owner. Thus, it is interesting to see what each color means and how it reflects the characters.

As the series progressed, the significance of the Nichirin swords’ colors became more apparent. With Demon Slayer’s third season right around the corner, plenty more Nichirin sword users are about to take center stage, such as the Mist and Love Hashira, who each wield unique swords in the eternal battle against demon-kind.

For example, amber Nichirin blades symbolize sound, which is the fighting style of Tengen Uzui, the flashy Sound Hashira who wields two gigantic, heavy cleavers connected by a chain. Lavender blades represent the Serpent, and they’re associated with the Serpent Breathing style, which is the style used by the Serpent Hashira, Obanai Iguro. The white swords symbolize mist, wielded by Muichiro Tokito, the Mist Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps, who is an expert in the Mist Breathing technique.

Furthermore, green swords symbolize the Wind, wielded by the Wind Hashira, Sanemi Shinazugawa, whose sword can unleash tornadoes of sword slashes upon any demon unlucky enough to have him as an opponent. When a demon slayer’s sword turns gray, it indicates two things. One is that they’re likely to master Stone Breathing, and the second is that they’re not going to wield a traditional Nichirin blade, like Stone Hashira, Gyomei Himejima, who wields a hefty ax attached to a large chain.

Finally, dark pink Nichirin blades represent love, which is the symbol and color of Mitsuri Kanroji, the Love Hashira who wields this blade and created the Love Breathing style thanks to her unique body composition. Meanwhile, indigo-gray blades represent the beast and are perfect for Inosuke Hashibira, the boar-headed tsundere swordsman who developed the Beast Breathing style after living in the mountains all of his life.

Overall, the color of a Nichirin blade is more than just a design choice. It reflects the personality, fighting style, and backstory of each character who wields them. As the story continues, we may see more interesting colors and styles of Nichirin swords, each with its unique meaning and significance in the world of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba.
