Gintama creator surprises Utsuro voice actor with sketch

Gintama, a beloved anime and manga series, has become one of the most popular of all time. The series was written and illustrated by Hideaki Sorachi and was serialized from December 2003 to June 2019, with all chapters being published under the Shueisha umbrella. Gintama is an alternate history of Edo-era Japan, where humans and aliens coexist after the latter’s arrival and the subsequent ban on swords. The story follows Gintoki Sakata, a samurai who works as a freelancer with his friends Shinpachi Shimura and Kagura to make ends meet.

Sorachi’s writing is known for its humor, and this is one of the main reasons why the series is so popular. However, Sorachi’s talents extend beyond the written word, as evidenced by a recent sketch that he drew of Koichi Yamadera, the voice actor behind the series’ Utsuro character. Yamadera posted the sketch on his Twitter profile, where it quickly went viral. In the sketch, Sorachi drew Yamadera’s face in a hilarious and exaggerated way, highlighting his nasolabial folds and other features.

Yamadera was delighted with the sketch, thanking Sorachi for his generosity and humor. He also joked that Sorachi’s self-insert character in the series, an anthropomorphic gorilla, is fittingly named “Gorilla” and thanked him for his work on the series. Sorachi is known for his sense of humor and expertise in comedy, which has made Gintama one of the most beloved anime and manga series of all time.

Despite the series’ popularity, it recently concluded with the release of Gintama: The Very Final film in January 2021. The film was preceded by The Semi-Final, which bridged the gap between the ending of the TV anime and the movie.
