Yuno’s Promotion to Knight Captain in Black Clover is Secretly Depressing

The latest development in Black Clover’s manga series sees Yuno being appointed as the captain of the Golden Dawn after the former leader, William Vangeance, relinquishes his position. Yuno’s promotion has a significant impact on the storyline and is considered one of the most depressing messages conveyed in the manga.

Yuno’s appointment as captain follows Lucius Zogratis’ attack on the Clover Kingdom, during which Yuno’s star magic played a crucial role in preventing the kingdom’s destruction. William acknowledges Yuno’s growth and surpasses him, making him the new captain of the Golden Dawn. This turn of events is surprising, given that William was expected to succeed Wizard King Julius, considering he was the leader of the most powerful and successful Magic Knights squad in the Clover Kingdom.

Yuno’s success story is unprecedented, especially when considering specific events. Although Yuno recently proved himself in battles against various devils, his earlier failure during the Spade Kingdom’s preemptive strike on the Golden Dawn base played a significant role in William’s capture, leading to a series of unfortunate events.

However, Yuno’s promotion reinforces one of the most depressing themes in Black Clover, as he uses star magic, one of the magical attributes passed down through the generations by his royal family of Grinberryall. As Yuno’s star magic manifested much later than his wind magic, which he associated with his time as an orphan, it automatically evokes his past as a commoner. Unfortunately, Yuno’s wind magic failed to conform to the hierarchical system of their world, where only nobles and royals could wield such powerful magic.

Together with Asta, Yuno represented the shonen-esque message that anyone could achieve their dreams if they worked hard enough. However, Yuno’s recognition for using his royal star magic as opposed to his wind magic disproves this feel-good message.

This latest development conflicts with one of Black Clover’s most important pieces of symbolism, which masterfully gave a positive spin to the star magic’s anti-shonen type of message. When fighting the King of Devils Lucifero, Yuno summoned his star magic for the first time, but it proved much less effective than his wind magic. That is until Asta used Yuno’s star magic to defeat Lucifero, creating the impression that even though Yuno was blessed with special magic as a royal and lived in another world than his “brother” Asta, Yuno could only use that royal power effectively when someone from his peasant family and former life helped him.

However, Yuno’s latest achievement in saving and gaining recognition from the Clover Kingdom is through using his royal magic without the help of his orphan peasant brother. As of now, Yuno and Asta could not be any farther apart metaphorically than they are now, leaving fans to wonder what direction the storyline will take next.
