Assassination Classroom Manga banned in US schools

The popular Japanese manga series, “Assassination Classroom,” has recently faced controversy and bans in public schools in the United States due to its controversial content. The manga follows a class of misfit students who are taught by an octopus-like creature named Koro-Sensei, who is also set to destroy the world. The students are tasked with assassinating Koro-Sensei before he destroys the world, using not only their academic skills but also their assassination skills.

Despite its popularity among school children in Japan, the series has faced bans from at least two schools in the United States – one in Florida and another in Wisconsin. The bans were put in place following complaints from teachers and parents regarding the manga’s content, particularly its violent and sexually explicit imagery. The images of students holding guns and trying to shoot their teacher were seen as especially concerning, given the ongoing issue of gun violence in American schools.

The controversy around “Assassination Classroom” is not unique, as other manga and graphic novels have also faced bans in American schools over the years. However, the series has become a focal point in the ongoing debate over what materials are appropriate for public school libraries and the impact of violent media on children.

In addition to the bans, there is also a bill in Florida that requires all school libraries to only contain materials that have been approved by a holder of an educational media specialist certificate from the Florida Board of Education. The bill has been cited in relation to “Assassination Classroom” and its content, further raising concerns about censorship and the restriction of free speech.

While the debate over “Assassination Classroom” continues, it is clear that the series has sparked important discussions about the role of violent media in American schools and the need for responsible media consumption. As educators and parents continue to grapple with these issues, it remains to be seen what impact these bans and restrictions will have on the availability of controversial materials in public school libraries.
